Case Study: Jake and the Nowhere Men
Ithaca, NY

About the Project
When one thinks about college bands usually three things come to mind: sex, drugs and rock and roll. This stereotype is perpetuated by films that touch on the college experience such as "Animal House" and by anecdotal stories concerning the alleged reckless behavior of college rock bands. After years of digesting this narrative, I was deeply curious to see what life was really like in a college rock band. This study followed the activities of Jake and the Nowhere Men, a band established by Ithaca College senior Jake Sullivan. During this study I was astonished to find that the band, despite appearing from the outset to be a bunch of haphazard men strumming guitars, was actually a well organized and cohesive team of talented musicians. However, much of the credit belongs to the leader of band, Jake Sullivan who is successfully able to take on multiple roles at once. In addition to this band, he is in The Agenda, Nick Wayne and the Bat Seeds, Grover Cleveland, Noise for Company, and he runs a record label called Ded Sullivan Productions which represents many local student bands. This is not to say that the band is completely devoid of conflict (or illicit substances). However, it is clear that all the members of the band have a career ahead of them in music if they so desire to pursue it.
